Abbas Issues Decree to Extend Nomination Period for Palestinian Elections to 18 Days

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree amending Decree-Law No. (1) of 2007 on Palestinian General Elections and its amendments, extending the nomination period for the elections to 18 days instead of 12 days.

The Palestinian News Agency "WAFA" said the amendment comes amid the "difficult field reality" facing Palestinians, and the restrictions on movement and travel in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, due to security and political circumstances.

It added that extending the nomination period aims to give electoral lists and candidates more time and flexibility to overcome geographical obstacles, complete and prepare official nomination papers, and submit them to the Central Elections Commission under the current circumstances.

Earlier, the Central Elections Commission had set the nomination period for the legislative elections at 12 days, starting on September 26 and ending on October 7, 2026.
