Xi: China and the United States must avoid conflict and confrontation

Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Thursday, during a summit with his American counterpart Donald Trump, affirmed that the world's two largest economies must avoid conflict and confrontation.

Xi said: "China and the United States must adhere to the principle of not engaging in conflict or confrontation between them", adding that "the militaries of both countries must maintain regular dialogue, improve communication mechanisms, and avoid crises".

He considered that Washington and Beijing have the responsibility to "develop and manage artificial intelligence to serve the public interest", as this technology topped the agenda of his summit with US President Donald Trump.

Xi said at the White House "We have the ability and responsibility together to develop and manage artificial intelligence to serve the public interest, and to ensure that its development always remains under human supervision".

Upon his arrival at the White House, the Chinese President called on the world's two largest economies to "enhance communication", stressing that the two competing powers share a common responsibility to advance human development.

He said "China and the United States, as two major countries, bear a historic responsibility to promote human development and progress", adding "we must enhance communication".

For his part, US President Donald Trump affirmed that the relationship between the United States and China is based on mutual respect, expressing pride in the relations between the two countries.

Trump said during a speech while receiving his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at the White House "I have built a friendship, indeed a great friendship, with President Xi, based on mutual respect and the vital interests of our peoples".

He pointed out that he would discuss with the Chinese President a number of pressing issues, including security and artificial intelligence.

He added that he is also discussing pressing issues related to security, technology, and super intelligence (which he now calls artificial intelligence)", noting that "the decisions we make in these areas today can enhance peace and prosperity for decades to come".
