Amman —

What do we want from and for Syria?

secure borders through which the movement of people and goods flows, and safe roads free from terrorist dens.

We want all smuggling operations of weapons, drugs, and extremists to stop; we want people to travel across its north, south, east, and west in comfort and safety.

We want it to be free from all tensions, conflicts, and divisions; we want it to be independent, sovereign, and in control; we want it to be a solid and prosperous economic base.

Jordan's supreme interest requires preserving the Syrian state, a strong, civil, pluralistic, modern, and unified state.

The relationship with Syria is imposed by neighborhood, common borders, Arabism, and economic interests. Is there any escaping all of this?

Even in light of disagreements, Jordan has a vision that it has held onto over time to maintain a good level of relations.

The relationship with Syria has undoubtedly witnessed positive developments, and Jordan has begun these steps to open the borders, including facilitating the transit of people and goods.

Just as Damascus has witnessed intensive visits by Jordanian officials and businessmen, Amman has witnessed intensive visits by Syrian officials and businessmen.

It is unreasonable for Jordan to be deprived of economic access to Syria while it hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees, and while it sees with its own eyes, on a daily basis, goods flowing into nearby Syria from various sources.

Have the risks ended? No, they have not; the security threat is continuous, which requires both countries to strengthen cooperation because the threat is shared.

The Arab Army is performing its duty to the fullest, even inside Syrian territory if necessary, and the Syrian Army and security forces must play their role.

There are joint projects that have stopped and must be restarted, and there is commercial and tourism movement that needs a safe environment.

Jordan is not a short-sighted state that would shoot itself in the foot, and the Jordanian state has historically risen above short-sightedness.
