The US Treasury Department announced on Tuesday that Washington has imposed sanctions on 10 individuals and entities, including those based in China, Hong Kong, and Pakistan, for helping the Iranian Ministry of Defense purchase weapons and components.
These sanctions are part of a broader effort by the administration of US President Donald Trump to economically isolate Iran and force it to negotiate to end the US-Iran war that broke out in February.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said, "As part of the 'Economic Exclusion Operation,' the Department will continue to target and disrupt those who provide material, technical, or financial support that allows the Iranian regime to continue its activities. The Department will not tolerate any support for the regime and will continue to monitor, identify, and isolate those who enable Iran in these practices."
The Treasury Department stated that the sanctions aim to undermine Tehran's ability to rebuild its weapons programs, while increasing the cost for parties supporting its procurement efforts.
