Alexey Panov, Associate Professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Industrial Pharmacy at the Russian Technological University, warned against the excessive use of effervescent medications, noting that they contain sodium, which may pose a risk to certain groups, especially when taken repeatedly on a daily basis.
Panov explained that people suffering from high blood pressure, chronic heart failure, or kidney disease, as well as those following low-salt diets, should pay attention to the amount of sodium they receive from these medications, as repeated doses may contribute to increasing their daily salt intake.
He added that effervescent tablets contain components that help them dissolve quickly in water, and their reaction results in the release of carbon dioxide gas, which may increase feelings of fullness, belching, and discomfort in people suffering from digestive system problems.
He stressed the necessity of dissolving effervescent tablets in water according to the instructions, and not swallowing them whole or consuming the solution before the tablet has completely dissolved and the reaction has stopped, while adhering to the specified amount of water to ensure the correct use of the medication.
He pointed out that some preparations also contain sweeteners, flavorings, and colorings that may not be suitable for people who have allergies to some of their components, emphasizing the importance of choosing the appropriate pharmaceutical form for the health condition and using medications according to the doctor's instructions and the attached leaflet.
