United States imposes sanctions on the International Criminal Court

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday, hours after one of its former judges won the Nobel Peace Prize, setting Washington on a diplomatic collision course with its European allies.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement before the official announcement, "President Trump will never allow the International Criminal Court to prosecute Americans."

Rubio added that for this reason, the United States is imposing sanctions on the ICC today, noting that the goal of the sanctions is to prohibit transactions with the court, cut off its resources, and prevent it from operating.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has taken consistently hostile positions against the ICC and has previously imposed sanctions on its prosecutors and judges, but this is the first time the sanctions could reach companies that provide services to the court.
