The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Tuesday that it continues to perform its field missions in support of peace and stability in the Arab country, at a time when the UN Security Council is discussing options for the period following the end of the mission's mandate on December 31, 2026.
UNIFIL stated that it remains committed to supporting peace and stability in the region by carrying out the tasks entrusted to it in accordance with Resolution 1701.
It explained that its tasks include monitoring field developments and reporting violations to the UN Security Council, communicating with the parties, supporting the Lebanese Army, and facilitating humanitarian missions.
It added: "While the Security Council considers the options for the post-UNIFIL phase, the mission continues its field work."
The current mandate of UNIFIL is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026, pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 2790 issued in August 2025, after which the mission will begin a gradual and safe withdrawal during 2027.
UNIFIL has been deployed in southern Lebanon since 1978, and its role was strengthened following the July 2006 war under Resolution 1701, to include monitoring the cessation of hostilities, supporting the deployment of the Lebanese Army, reporting violations, and communicating and coordinating between the Lebanese and Israeli sides.
