UN concern over escalation in the Strait of Hormuz

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his deep concern on Wednesday regarding reports of further escalation in and around the Strait of Hormuz over the past few days, including attacks on commercial vessels and threats of further actions targeting maritime infrastructure and energy facilities.

In a statement issued on his behalf, Guterres emphasized the need to "restore and fully respect the rights and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and its surroundings in accordance with international law," calling on all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any actions or rhetoric that could further fuel the already volatile situation.

He warned that "any further escalation carries grave risks that could affect civilians, regional stability, international peace and security, and the global economy," urging the parties to make full use of diplomatic channels and resolve outstanding issues through dialogue and negotiations.

The UN Secretariat affirmed its readiness to support all credible efforts aimed at de-escalation and reaching a comprehensive and sustainable settlement.
