China Calls for Effective Measures to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Iranian counterpart Abbas Araqchi to take effective measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, urging Tehran and Washington to exercise wisdom and restraint, affirming that the continuation of hostilities is not in the interest of both parties or the international community.

Wang said that Beijing hopes that regional tensions will not spread to Yemen and the Red Sea, affirming China's support for dialogue based on mutual respect for sovereignty and security between Iran and the Gulf countries.

Navigation through the Strait of Hormuz has sharply declined, with only four ships crossing the strait on Tuesday, compared to an average of 18 ships over the previous ten days, according to preliminary data. The strait is a vital passage for global oil and gas trade, while escalating tensions linked to the war between Iran and the United States have disrupted shipping traffic.

The talks also coincide with rising tensions in Yemen and the Red Sea, where Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have heightened concerns about the security of trade and energy routes in the region.
