US President Donald Trump, according to several media outlets on Friday, intends to appoint current US Intelligence Director Jay Clayton as the government's reference for artificial intelligence affairs.
Earlier this weekend, Trump said he would soon announce the name of the person he had chosen to take over the file in place of David Sax, who left his position at the end of March.
CBS television station indicated that Trump may keep Jay Clayton in his current position, adding this new mandate to his powers.
The sixty-year-old Clayton assumed the position of Director of National Intelligence ("DNI") shortly before, following the Senate's approval of his confirmation in late July. Before joining the Trump administration, he had been serving as the Federal Attorney in Manhattan since April 2025.
Between 2017 and 2020, Clayton also headed the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which oversees financial markets, and Trump appointed him to this position.
Clayton, a Virginia native, has been a business lawyer for over two decades, particularly in the financial sector.
Clayton has no experience in the technology sector, unlike David Sax, a Silicon Valley investor and entrepreneur.
The anticipated appointment of a new reference in the field of artificial intelligence comes at a time when this file has gained increasing importance in recent months, particularly due to growing concerns about the ability of companies innovating with this technology to control it.
Top executives of artificial intelligence companies on Tuesday pledged to take a series of measures to enhance internal control and manage artificial intelligence risks, but without any external regulation that Trump opposes.
