The National Water Carrier Project Receives a Set of Facilities and Exemptions

The Council of Ministers, in its meeting held last Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, approved the decision of the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, which includes granting the project a set of facilities and exemptions necessary to start implementing the project, as part of completing the procedures related to the start of the National Water Carrier project.

The decision comes within the framework of facilitating the procedures necessary to start implementing the project, which is the first of its kind, and aims to desalinate 300 million cubic meters of seawater annually, and pump it through pipes extending for about 450 kilometers; to provide nearly 40 percent of the Kingdom's drinking water needs, forming a key source in enhancing national water security.

The amount of water the project will provide annually is estimated at the capacity of all the Kingdom's dams, and nearly three times what the Disi project produces, where the annual per capita share will double from 60 to 110 cubic meters of water per year, and the number of water supply days will increase from one day to three days a week, in all governorates of the Kingdom.
