The League of Arab States emphasized the importance of strengthening Arab cooperation in facing the increasing risks witnessed by the region, including earthquakes, floods, forest fires, sand and dust storms, heatwaves, drought, desertification, water scarcity, and sea-level rise, noting that investment in early warning systems is a necessity.
This came during the Arab League's participation in the work of the Second Arab Forum for Early Warning and Disaster Preparedness, hosted by the Arab States Broadcasting Union, with the participation of representatives from Arab countries, Arab, UN, regional, and international organizations, as well as experts and specialists in disaster risk reduction and crisis management.
It pointed out that the repercussions of these risks extend to the lives of the population, their livelihoods, infrastructure, natural resources, and vital sectors, stressing that investment in early warning systems is a necessity to protect lives and property, safeguard development gains, and enhance the resilience and recovery capacity of communities.
It explained that the development of these systems requires providing accurate data and reliable information, updating monitoring and forecasting tools, and enhancing information exchange and coordination between meteorological centers and entities concerned with civil protection and crisis management, in addition to ensuring that warnings reach the population quickly and clearly, especially remote communities and the most vulnerable groups.
