Syrian Defense Minister Morhaf Abu Qasra visited the headquarters of the Joint Special Forces in Qatar on Sunday, as part of strengthening military cooperation between the two countries and exchanging expertise in training and qualification fields.
The visit coincided with talks held by Abu Qasra in Doha with the Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, Saud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, which addressed defense cooperation and regional and international developments.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated, in a post on the American company "X" platform, that "Major General Abu Qasra and his accompanying delegation visited the headquarters of the Joint Special Forces of the Qatari Armed Forces, within the framework of enhancing military cooperation between the two countries and exchanging expertise and benefiting from experiences in the fields of military training and qualification."
For his part, Al Thani said, in a post on the same platform, that he discussed with Abu Qasra "ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between our countries in defense fields, the latest developments in the region and current security challenges, and the importance of intensifying joint efforts in a way that contributes to enhancing regional security and stability."
According to two statements issued by the Syrian and Qatari ministries of defense, the ministers' meeting addressed issues and topics of common interest and ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries, in the presence of a number of senior officers and officials from both sides.
The visit comes within the framework of continuous contacts between Damascus and Doha to enhance defense cooperation, which included discussions on developing Syrian military capabilities and defense industries and benefiting from modern technologies.
In January 2026, Abu Qasra discussed with the Qatari ambassador in Damascus and a delegation from "Barzan Holdings," a company specializing in defense industries, the prospects for military cooperation between the two countries.
Abu Qasra also held two phone calls with his Qatari counterpart last March and August, addressing security and regional developments and ways to enhance joint coordination.
Relations between Damascus and Doha have been witnessing a rapprochement since the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024, as Qatar affirmed its support for Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rebuilding of state institutions.
