Successive explosions occurred early Monday at a military site near the city of Aleppo in northern Syria, according to official media, hindering the arrival of rescue teams and prompting authorities to cut off roads leading to the area, without the causes of the explosions being clear or any casualties being reported.
The official news agency (SANA) reported an "explosion at a Syrian Arab Army site near the town of Al-Eiss south of Aleppo," which is about 35 km from the city center.
A resident of the Hamdaniya neighborhood in Aleppo told Agence France-Presse, "We heard a loud explosion and heard it in Aleppo, went up to the roof and saw large flames from the west."
The official news channel broadcast a video showing debris flying tens of meters in the air at the explosion site.
The news channel reported that civil defense and ambulance teams were heading to the area in anticipation of possible casualties.
Fissal Muhammad Ali, commander of civil defense operations in Aleppo, said, "The continued explosions in the Al-Eiss area south of Aleppo are hindering the arrival of ambulance and rescue teams to the site," warning civilians not to approach the site.
Aleppo Governor Azza al-Gharib urged residents via his Facebook account not to leave their homes or head to the explosion site, assuring that hospitals and emergency teams were "on standby."
The Ministry of Interior announced the closure of the Damascus-Aleppo International Road from the Aleppo side, while SANA reported that the Internal Security Command also cut off roads leading to the explosion site "to ensure the safety of civilians."
The incident comes two days after authorities announced the killing of 11 army personnel in an explosion of unknown origin at a military site in the Aiyash area west of Deir ez-Zor.
On September 9, 14 people were killed and 11 injured in an explosion of a temporary weapons and war remnants collection depot near Sarmada in Idlib, while five people were killed in a vehicle loaded with ammunition explosion in the same province earlier this month.
