At least ten people were killed in a collision between two high-speed trains on Wednesday about 150 kilometers south of Madrid, according to local authorities, who warned that the death toll could rise.
A spokesperson for the authorities of Castilla-La Mancha, where the accident occurred, said, "There are at least ten dead, and this number could rise."
The mayor of Urda, Manuel Galan, told Spanish state television (TVE) that "two trains collided, and there are injured people."
A spokesperson for Spanish emergency services reported that the trains collided shortly before 9:00 AM.
The spokesperson said that "all resources are currently being mobilized," including "several firefighting teams, three helicopters, and two mobile intensive care units."
The railway infrastructure management company (ADIF) confirmed the collision, warning in a post on social media that train traffic on the high-speed rail line connecting Madrid to the south of the country has been suspended.
The accident comes less than a year after two trains collided in Adamuz, southern Spain, resulting in the death of 46 people.
