Spanish Ambassador: Jordan-Europe Investment Conference is an opportunity to boost investments in the Kingdom

Spain's Ambassador to Jordan, José Luis Pardo, said that the Jordan-Europe Investment Conference, scheduled to be held on November 19 at the Dead Sea, constitutes an opportunity to enhance interest in investment opportunities in the Kingdom.

Pardo said, in an interview with the Jordan News Agency (Petra), that work is underway with Jordan to prepare the new partnership framework for cooperation for the 2026-2030 period, which identifies four priority areas: improving access to quality primary healthcare services, women's empowerment, expanding infrastructure, and supporting social cohesion.

He added that for decades, Jordan has enjoyed a "priority country" classification within the Spanish International Development Cooperation program, implemented by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

Regarding trade exchange between the two countries, he explained that the value of Spanish exports to Jordan ranged between 300 and 400 million euros over the past ten years, while the value of imports from Jordan ranged between 40 and 80 million euros.

He pointed out that Spanish consulting and engineering companies have won, since 2010, contracts to implement projects in Jordan with a cumulative value exceeding 840 million euros, explaining that most of these projects are integrated, including Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), and are concentrated in the renewable energy sector, as wind and solar energy projects represent about 60 percent of their total value, in addition to the mining, industrial, oil, gas, and water sectors.

He emphasized that Jordan and Spain are among the most open economies in the world, which provides great potential to increase bilateral trade in goods and services across various sectors, noting that more than 700 Spanish companies trade regularly with Jordanian companies.

Regarding the Palestinian cause, the Ambassador affirmed Spain's firm commitment to supporting the implementation of the two-state solution, based on the roadmap contained in the New York Declaration, as the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the two-state solution, and allows the states of Palestine and Israel to live side by side in security and peace, within internationally recognized borders.

As for Jerusalem, the Ambassador expressed his country's deep concern regarding the developments the city has witnessed in recent years, affirming Spain's support for the historical role of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, and its appreciation for the continuous efforts led by His Majesty King Abdullah II to preserve the historical and legal status quo in the Holy City and safeguard its identity and sanctities.

Regarding the Christian pilgrimage route, the Spanish Ambassador explained that the two countries signed an agreement last year for cooperation between the Christian pilgrimage routes in Jordan and Spain, the "Camino de Santiago" and the "Camino de Egeria," which derives its name from the Spanish traveler and pilgrim Egeria, who visited the holy sites in Jordan in the fourth century AD.

He emphasized that this cooperation constitutes an opportunity to enhance Jordan's presence on the global Christian pilgrimage map and to introduce its religious and historical sites that hold important evidence of Christian history, thereby contributing to revitalizing religious tourism, attracting pilgrims and visitors from Spain and Europe, and consolidating the Kingdom's position as a major destination for Christian pilgrimage.

He stressed the importance of strengthening direct communication between the Jordanian and Spanish peoples, due to its role in consolidating bilateral relations and expanding horizons for joint cooperation, noting that education and culture constitute one of the priority areas in the partnership between the two countries.

He explained that the Cervantes Institute in Amman, along with a number of Jordanian universities, has continued for decades to contribute to teaching and spreading the Spanish language, which enhances cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the two peoples, pointing out that Spanish is considered one of the most widely used languages internationally.

The Ambassador added that the embassy implements an active annual cultural program that includes music, cinema, and the arts, in cooperation with local partners.

He indicated that hundreds of Jordanian students have studied medicine and engineering in Spain since the 1960s, which contributed to the emergence of Jordanian-Spanish families that formed a human and cultural bridge enhancing relations between the two countries, confirming the continuation of this approach, as hundreds of Jordanian students head annually to Spanish public and private universities to continue their studies and develop their academic careers, within programs taught in both Spanish and English.
