The Acting Director General of the Jordan Standards and Metrology Institution, Wafa' Al-Momani, said that the institution started its preparations early for the winter season by implementing a proactive regulatory plan on factories, markets, sales centers, and warehouses, to ensure that heating means comply with standard specifications and safety requirements.
Al-Momani added that the institution's regulatory approach starts from border crossings, factories, and before the product is introduced to the markets, and includes conducting intensive, early, and continuous inspection campaigns on factories, markets, sales centers, and warehouses in all governorates of the Kingdom, and withdrawing samples and following up on non-compliant products.
She explained that the institution held a workshop and a meeting with stakeholders in heater, cooker, and oven factories at the institution's headquarters on July 19, 2026, during which the technical requirements, data, and instructions that must be adhered to were clarified, and the necessity of factory readiness before the start of the winter season was emphasized.
She pointed out that the meeting included surveying cases of non-compliance and improper use of heating means to reduce accidents, and taking the necessary measures, and placing safe usage data and warnings in Arabic to facilitate dealing with home heating means.
Al-Momani pointed out that the inspection tours focus intensively on home heating devices of all types, including gas and kerosene heaters, devices operating by burning gaseous fuel, home cooking stoves, electric heaters, electrical connections and plugs.
The campaigns include all seasonal devices prepared for introduction and circulated in the local market, specifically home heating devices operating with gas of all types, fireless, outdoor and garden heaters, kerosene heaters, electric heaters, home cooking stoves from ovens and cookers, and electrical connections and plugs.
Al-Momani pointed out that the institution examined 114 samples of different heaters operating with gas or electricity in the laboratories of the Royal Scientific Society, and it was found that some samples did not comply with the approved Jordanian standard specifications.
She added that the institution seized 52,945 heaters and heating devices, and issued 102 destruction decisions.
She explained that the violations detected by the institution include aspects related to the data sheet and technical requirements, with special attention to clauses directly related to user safety.
Al-Momani confirmed that portable gas heaters are strictly prohibited from being traded, based on the prohibition decision issued by the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply.
She explained that the prohibition also includes any products or heaters that are proven to be in violation of the requirements of the technical rules and Jordanian standard specifications, and it is proven that they pose a danger to user safety.
Al-Momani said that the institution relies on a dual control system to ensure that heaters that do not comply with specifications do not enter the Jordanian markets.
She added that the system includes border control at customs centers, by withdrawing the necessary samples to ensure the conformity of heaters of all types, or presenting examination reports from accredited international laboratories for shipments arriving from heating devices and means.
She emphasized that no shipment that does not comply with the requirements of the technical rules and Jordanian standard specifications will be allowed to enter.
She pointed out that the control also includes local factories and a survey of local markets, and preventing factories from introducing home gas heaters, organizing the confiscation and seizure of produced quantities to prevent the circulation of these products, and conducting the necessary examinations to ensure their conformity and safe use, or obtaining an examination certificate from an accredited external laboratory proving their conformity.
She added that the institution verifies the validity of examination reports and the validity of the examination laboratory's accreditation, and the examination procedures also include ensuring the conformity of the gas regulator and the hose attached to the heater.
Al-Momani stressed that the institution updates the standard specifications for heaters, tracks production inputs, and ensures the existence of legally licensed and authorized industries.
She added that the procedures include conducting targeted, proactive, and intensive field campaigns on factories, markets, and warehouses, and preventing the introduction of any locally manufactured or imported home gas heater before ensuring its conformity and presenting examination reports from an accredited external laboratory, which should include the regulator and the hose attached to the heater.
She pointed out the obligation of factories to clearly indicate the year of manufacture on heaters, and to give priority in following up on complaints.
The procedures also include implementing awareness programs and workshops in cooperation with the media and relevant parties to inform citizens about the importance of safe use of heating means and the danger of using products of unknown origin.
Al-Momani called on citizens, when purchasing heaters, to buy from reliable sources and exclusively from well-known and licensed commercial stores and exhibitions, and with a tax invoice that facilitates access to the person responsible for introducing the product to the markets, and to avoid buying from unknown sources, especially through social media.
She emphasized the need to verify the information written on the product data sheet in Arabic, and to ensure the manufacturer's data, address, country of origin, year of manufacture, thermal capacity, technical characteristics, warnings, and safe use instructions, the presence of an instruction booklet, and the absence of any apparent modification or tampering with the heater.
She also called for ensuring the availability of safety means, the presence of a fixed and safe gas regulator, that the hose is intended for use with gaseous fuel, providing appropriate ventilation and following the instructions attached to the product, and ensuring the closure of the gas cylinder valve after use.
She stressed not to make any modifications to the heater or safety systems, and to ensure periodic maintenance before the start of the winter season by a specialized technician from the manufacturing company.
The institution called on citizens to inform it in case of suspicion of non-compliance of the heater, such as the absence of a data sheet and an instruction booklet in Arabic, the absence of a carbon monoxide sensor, a sensor for extinguishing the heater in case of tipping over, or any other safety devices, the absence of the hose intended for gas, or a fixed gas regulator "a fixed gas hour and does not contain a calibration disc", indicating the possibility of submitting complaints via the unified complaints phone and WhatsApp on the number (065301243).
