Saudi Arabia and Qatar in a friendly match at the opening of Aramco Stadium

The Saudi and Qatari national teams will meet in an international friendly match on 27 December, marking the opening of Aramco Stadium in Al-Khobar, one of the venues designated to host matches for the 2034 World Cup, which will be hosted by Saudi Arabia.

The Qatar Football Association announced, via its official account on the "X" platform, that the match will take place as part of the two teams' preparations to participate in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 7 January to 5 February.

Aramco Stadium in Al-Khobar is considered one of the most prominent modern sports projects in Saudi Arabia, with a capacity of approximately 47,000 spectators and a total area spanning about 800,000 square meters. It is one of the facilities designated to host the 2034 World Cup.

According to the Saudi bid file, the stadium will host matches in the group stage, round of 32, and round of 16 of the 2034 World Cup, in addition to hosting 2034 Asian Cup matches, which will take place across three Saudi cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Khobar.

The stadium features an architectural design inspired by the water vortices formed on the coasts of the Arabian Gulf, in addition to adopting integrated cooling systems and modern technologies.

The Qatar Football Association had previously announced that the national team will play two friendly matches in Doha: the first against Australia on 13 November, and the second against South Korea on the 17th of the same month.

The draw for the 2027 Asian Cup placed the host Saudi national team at the top of Group A, alongside the national teams of Oman, Palestine, and Kuwait.

The "Green" team will kick off its campaign by facing Palestine on 7 January at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, before meeting Oman on the 12th of the same month at the same venue, and then facing Kuwait on 17 January at the Al-Inma Stadium at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.

In contrast, the Qatari national team was placed in Group Six alongside Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia.

The "Maroon", holding the title of the last two editions, will begin its campaign by facing Thailand on 11 January at the Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University Stadium in Riyadh, then face Indonesia on the 16th of the same month at Aramco Stadium in Al-Khobar, before concluding its group stage matches by facing Japan on 20 January at the Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University Stadium in Riyadh.

The Saudi and Qatari national teams met earlier this month in the semi-finals of the 27th Gulf Cup, where the Saudi team decided the match via penalty shootouts 3-2, before the "Green" team crowned the title following their 2-0 victory over their Emirati counterpart in the final match.
