Rural women in Jordan.. A pillar of food security and sustainable development

The International Day of Rural Women, which falls on October 15th of each year, highlights the role of women in supporting food security and economic development, in light of challenges related to water scarcity, climate change, rising production costs, and difficulty in accessing finance and markets, making the empowerment of rural women a necessity to enhance the sustainability of local communities and improve livelihoods.

Rural women play a pivotal role in agricultural and productive activities, from cultivating crops and raising livestock to food and dairy processing, producing household provisions, and marketing local products, in addition to their contribution to preserving natural resources and traditional agricultural knowledge.

Home-based projects and cooperative societies also constitute an opportunity for women to increase their household income, develop their products, and reach new markets.

In Jordan, the issue of empowering rural women gains special importance in light of the challenges facing the agricultural sector, as women working in it are affected by high production costs and limited water resources, alongside difficulties in obtaining financing, land, training, and marketing, as well as family care responsibilities that may limit their ability to expand their economic activities.

In this context, the Agricultural Credit Corporation has allocated five million dinars from its 2025 lending plan for the rural financing program, which targets residents of rural areas, the Badia, and poverty pockets, with a focus on women and the unemployed, with the aim of providing sustainable job opportunities and enhancing economic activity in the targeted areas.

It was also announced in June 2026 that a project to enhance women's economic participation in flower cultivation in Tafilah Governorate, in partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and UN Women, with a budget of approximately 1.917 million dollars, aims to support women's economic empowerment and promote sustainable agricultural development.

Increasing the participation of rural women in the economy requires providing broader opportunities for vocational and digital training, facilitating access to loans and markets, and supporting small projects in the fields of food processing, packaging, and e-marketing, in addition to encouraging women to engage in cooperative and productive societies and develop their project management capabilities.

The importance of enhancing women's benefit from climate-smart agricultural technologies and water conservation methods also stands out, helping them face the effects of climate change, improve productivity, and reduce losses.

The International Day of Rural Women, which was established by the United Nations in 2007 and celebrated for the first time in 2008, comes as an affirmation of the role of women in agricultural development, food security, and poverty reduction.

In Jordan, the empowerment of rural women remains linked to their ability to access resources and economic opportunities fairly, and to transform their productive efforts into sustainable projects that contribute to improving household income, supporting the local economy, and enhancing development in various governorates.
