((Reading Marathon)) Launches Tuesday with Participation of 130 Entities in Efforts to Establish Reading as a National Practice

Next Tuesday will kick off the events of the seventh edition of «Reading Marathon» organized by the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation under the slogan «Jordan Reads» with the participation of more than 130 entities from various cultural, literary, educational, and community sectors, coinciding with the National Reading Day which falls on September 29 of each year.

The Foundation announced the details of the marathon during a press conference held last Sunday at its headquarters in Jabal Amman, noting that the initiative, which started in 2020 has witnessed over the past years the participation of more than a million readers, with over 23 million pages read being documented.

Nizar Al-Hamoud, Director of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Library, said that the Foundation continues its efforts to enhance awareness of the importance of reading, pointing out that public libraries have evolved their function to become sources of knowledge, self-building, and keeping up with new knowledge.

He explained that the marathon involves participants dedicating time to reading in interactive environments, with the option to choose books and locations they prefer to read in, and documenting what was read as part of the marathon activities, thereby promoting the concept of free reading and encouraging it to become a daily practice.

Al-Hamoud pointed out that the expansion of the initiative through partnerships with national and community institutions has contributed to its reach across various governorates of the Kingdom, coinciding with the adoption of September 29 of each year as the National Reading Day by a decision from the Prime Ministry.

He noted that this year's edition coincides with the launch of the National Reading Strategy, adopted by the Culture, Youth, and Sports Committee in the Senate in 2025 under the title «Towards a Reading Jordan» to support efforts aimed at establishing reading as a sustainable community practice
