The Greater Amman Municipality dealt with about 6 to 7 thousand trees by pruning in Al-Ridwan neighborhood, while only 66 trees were transferred from sidewalks to nurseries, as part of the works to rehabilitate sidewalks and address the conditions of the trees on them, according to the head of the Amman Municipality Committee, Ahmed Al-Malki.
Al-Malki said on Tuesday that the main goal of the Municipality's measures is to remove obstacles that prevent citizens from using sidewalks safely, explaining that trees may be an obstacle in some cases, and that sidewalks are an integral part of the organizational street.
He added that most streets have a capacity of about 12 meters, while the width of the sidewalks is about two meters, pointing out that the Municipality worked to create sidewalks with larger areas in public transport areas, especially on the axes of the Rapid Bus project, which contributes to enabling citizens to reach public transport and move around it safely and without obstacles.
He explained that the Municipality's dealing with trees on the sidewalks does not mean removing them all, as each tree is evaluated according to its condition, and trees that allow pruning and provide a safe space for pedestrian traffic can be kept.
He pointed out that the Municipality has started a campaign to rebuild sidewalks and address the conditions of trees on them, through specialized teams that identify trees that need pruning, transfer, or removal when necessary.
Al-Malki confirmed that the Municipality relies on about 12 types of trees suitable for planting on sidewalks, stressing that the goal of the measures is to achieve a balance between preserving the green wealth and providing safe and suitable sidewalks for pedestrian traffic.
