OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk expressed their support on Saturday for Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal to slow down the pace of artificial intelligence development, amid a series of related incidents.
Altman wrote on the X platform, "I agree with Dario," explaining that his company will use independent observers to verify the safety of its AI systems, similar to the commitment announced by Amodei on Saturday, while Musk said that "Dario is right."
On Friday, 25 recipients of the Fields Medal—considered the highest honor in mathematics—warned in a letter that the race by AI companies to solve famous mathematical problems threatens to cause permanent damage to the field.
Their joint warning letter, which bore the signatures of prominent scientists including Terence Tao, comes days after OpenAI announced it had solved one of the "Millennium Prize Problems" that had baffled mathematicians for generations.
Safety warnings issued by AI researchers, alongside several recent incidents involving AI models from developers including OpenAI going out of human control, have sparked concern and calls for stricter safety regulations.
