Just one day before the US midterm congressional elections, President Donald Trump's administration filed a request with the Supreme Court to exclude the ballots of around 20,000 individuals in California, claiming they are not US citizens, pending verification of their status.
According to American media reports on Monday, the Trump administration turned to the Supreme Court after a federal appeals court rejected a similar request on Friday.
Lawyers for the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to require California officials to separate ballots cast by citizens from those cast by individuals suspected of not being citizens.
This move—which aims to exclude mail-in ballots from approximately 20,000 people whom the administration claims are non-citizens—comes on the eve of the midterm congressional elections scheduled for Tuesday.
The United States heads to the midterm congressional elections on Tuesday, which include all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, along with 35 Senate seats, including two special elections in Florida and Ohio.
Currently, Republicans hold 218 seats in the House of Representatives compared to 214 for Democrats, while they occupy 53 Senate seats versus 45 for Democrats and two independents who align with them.
The results will determine which party controls Congress during the final two years of President Trump's term, with the new Congress beginning its work on January 3, 2027.
