Muaaita: The development of party life is not linked to the number of parties but to their political identity

The President of the Independent Election Commission, Musa Muaaita, said on Sunday that the development of party life in Jordan is not linked to the number of parties, but to their ability to build a clear political identity and present programs that reflect their orientations and objectives.

Muaaita added, during a session titled "Parties in Political Work: The Image and Impact" within the Future of Media and Communication Forum, that the distinction of each party with a clear political identity and a special intellectual color represents the basis for the development of party work.

He explained that democratic experiences cannot be copied from other societies, but rather require the development of a model that suits the nature of Jordanian society, given the different social and political circumstances among countries.

He pointed out that achieving real change in the structure and working method of parties is not limited to amending legislation, but requires a change in societal culture and social structure, which is a process that needs continuous time and effort.

Muaaita pointed out that the laws of political modernization and the amendments that were approved serve the desired objectives, but the biggest challenge is changing the societal culture, stressing that changing the societal mindset cannot be achieved "with the push of a button," and that the important thing is to continue working and not to stop.

He pointed out that he used to believe years ago that amending the election law and adopting the proportional list might contribute to solving the problems associated with political participation, but he later realized that the matter is not so simple, stressing that political modernization is a decision of the Jordanian state, and that the development of party life is a gradual process that requires time.

Muaaita considered that one of the positive indicators of the development of awareness of party work is the citizens' beginning to ask the deputies about the parties they belong to during meetings, explaining that this question was not asked about three years ago, and that it reflects the growing awareness of the importance of party work, and the goal of reaching a council of deputies based on collective party work.

He pointed out that the parliamentary and municipal elections usually raise a limited number of key issues that attract the attention of voters and determine the direction of competition between parties.
