Moroccan Prime Minister Fatima Mansouri forms a four-party coalition

The Authenticity and Modernity Party, the winner of the legislative elections in Morocco, announced on Monday a four-party coalition to form Fatima Zahra Mansouri's government, including its partner in the outgoing government, the Istiqlal Party, and two center-left parties.

The party said in a statement, after days of consultations, "A political majority has been agreed upon, consisting of the following parties: Authenticity and Modernity, Istiqlal, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Progress and Socialism Party," while the National Rally of Independents party, which led the outgoing government, remained in the opposition, having come in second in the September 23 elections, which were topped by the Authenticity and Modernity Party.

On September 29, King Mohammed VI appointed the coordinator of the collective leadership of the latter, Fatima Zahra Mansouri, as Prime Minister, tasked with forming a ministerial team for five years, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the history of Morocco.

The statement added that the four parties will propose "names of female and male ministers who possess competence, political sense, integrity, and honesty, within a harmonious and strong government, capable of implementing the contents of the government program that will be prepared as soon as possible."

The members of the government, proposed by Mansouri, will be appointed by King Mohammed VI. It is customary for ministers of strategic sectors, such as the Interior and Foreign Affairs, to be appointed from outside political parties.

The announced majority represents 207 seats out of 395 in the House of Representatives, and marks the return of the Socialist Union and Progress and Socialism parties (center-left) to the government after five years in parliamentary opposition.

The next government faces several political and social challenges, foremost among them restoring confidence in political institutions, and addressing youth unemployment and social and regional disparities.
