Minister of Environment Discusses with Iraqi Counterpart Strengthening Cooperation to Face Common Challenges

The Minister of Environment, Dr. Ayman Sulaiman, met with the Iraqi Minister of Environment, Sarwa Abdulwahid Qader, on Wednesday, to discuss ways to strengthen environmental cooperation between the two countries and to face common environmental and climate challenges.

On the sidelines of the meeting of the Arab Ministers of Environment, held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, the two sides discussed the main environmental challenges facing Jordan and Iraq, foremost among which are the effects of climate change and the repercussions of dust and sandstorms, and their environmental, health, and economic impacts, stressing the importance of enhancing coordination, exchanging expertise and experiences to mitigate the effects of these phenomena.

Both sides emphasized the importance of seeking ways to mobilize international support to enable the two countries to face the growing effects of climate change and dust and sandstorms, and to enhance their capacities to adapt to and respond to these challenges, and to benefit from available climate financing mechanisms.

The two sides also agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Jordanian and Iraqi Ministries of Environment, on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), scheduled to be held in the Turkish city of Antalya, to enhance cooperation frameworks and exchange expertise and knowledge in environmental and climate fields of mutual interest.

The meeting comes within the framework of Jordan and Iraq's keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation and Arab coordination in facing environmental and climate challenges, and to develop joint efforts to deal with the effects of climate change.
