Minister of Agriculture: Planting 4 Million Trees as Part of an Initiative to Plant 11 Million Trees by 2030

The Minister of Agriculture, Saieb Khraisat, said on Tuesday that the selection of trees requires clear criteria that take into account the nature of the climate and location, explaining that some types of trees planted are not suitable for the region, while other types require large amounts of water or shed their leaves heavily.

Khraisat pointed out during a meeting of the Parliamentary Environment and Climate Committee that some forest trees may cause damage to sidewalks, fences, and structures due to the extension of their roots, and may affect the foundations of some buildings, making the selection of the appropriate type essential in afforestation operations.

He emphasized the importance of afforestation and reforestation operations being based on the selection of types that can continue for decades without leaving negative impacts on the surrounding sites, along with promoting awareness of the importance of selecting suitable trees.

He pointed out that the Ministry of Agriculture launched an initiative to plant 11 million trees by 2030, nearly 4 million of which have been planted so far, while municipalities have planted nearly a quarter of a million trees since the beginning of the year.

Khraisat stressed the importance of increasing the green area and expanding afforestation, in parallel with selecting the appropriate types for the climate and nature of the sites, so as not to cause obstacles to public life.
