New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he will ask US President Donald Trump to withdraw Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from the city, a day after a shooting incident linked to the federal agency.
The New York Police Department reported that a man was shot in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx during an altercation with federal agents.
Mamdani and the US Department of Homeland Security later confirmed that the shooting occurred during an operation carried out by ICE, which is tasked with enforcing Trump's crackdown on immigration.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the agents were attempting to "arrest an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic previously convicted of theft, with multiple prior offenses including assault, robbery, and possession of drugs and weapons."
He added, "ICE agents immediately provided first aid. The individual remains alive and is receiving treatment at the hospital."
The department had initially stated that the target had ties to a Dominican gang, but later issued a revised statement removing that reference.
Mamdani said a five-year-old child was inside the vehicle when the incident occurred, adding, "This is a very dangerous and unacceptable situation."
He continued, "When we speak, I will demand that President Trump end all ICE immigration enforcement operations in our city. I will not stand idly by while ICE agents terrorize our communities."
Trump had sharply criticized Mamdani before he took office in January, but the relationship between them later saw an unexpected rapprochement.
