US Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded on Monday that the Iranian delegation participating in the United Nations General Assembly leave the United States immediately after negotiations stalled, according to a US official and a second source familiar with the matter, for the "Axios" website.
The US official said that the request for the Iranian delegation to leave came after their stay period had expired and the work of the United Nations General Assembly had ended.
A second source confirmed that the United States had demanded the departure of the Iranian delegation, but noted that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was already scheduled to travel back to Tehran on Monday evening.
On Monday evening, following Rubio's orders, the US Mission to the United Nations informed the Iranian Mission that Araqchi's delegation must leave New York immediately, according to the US official.
According to Axios, the Iranian delegation, including Araqchi, left for the airport a few hours later and boarded a flight from New York to Doha at 1:20 AM on Tuesday.
Araqchi said that Iranian-Qatari talks were held on Monday in New York, discussing ideas to find a way out that ensures the achievement of Iranian conditions, as reported by the Iranian News Agency "IRNA".
Araqchi explained that the talks discussed ways to "find a way out to achieve Iranian conditions and how to meet these conditions".
He pointed out that the Qatari side will present the results of the talks with the United States, and then the final response from the United States will be conveyed to the Iranian side, expressing hope to receive the response on Tuesday.
He confirmed that the exchange of messages and communications with the Qatari and Pakistani mediators was always ongoing, but it took a more serious form "in light of the initiative presented by Iran".
Araqchi explained that he would leave New York for Tehran in a few hours, indicating that the Qataris know how to deliver the response as soon as it is available.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that the US negotiating team held indirect talks with Iran on Monday through mediators.
Trump denied, via Truth Social, that he had offered Iran sanctions relief and the release of frozen funds, saying that the "Axios" website published a report "alleging that he offered Iran sanctions relief and the release of frozen funds. This is not true".
