Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that Lebanon welcomes any replacement forces for "UNIFIL" if it is not possible to extend them to continue implementing Resolution 1701 and support the Lebanese Army in extending the authority of the Lebanese state over the southern territories up to the internationally recognized borders.
According to a statement today, Wednesday, Aoun said that the non-extension of "UNIFIL" and the failure to form a replacement international force will create a vacuum that does not serve security and stability in the region, especially if the Israeli occupation of southern villages and towns continues.
He pointed out that Israel refrains from applying the "Framework Agreement" reached in the Lebanese-American-Israeli negotiations in Washington, and does not commit to a ceasefire, refraining from destroying homes, bulldozing and correcting disputed points on the "Blue Line", and returning Lebanese prisoners to their homeland.
He pointed out that these Israeli practices keep the tension in the south despite the efforts exerted by Lebanon to put the contents of the "Framework Agreement" into effect.
