Launch of a Cooperative Project for Cultivating Local Garlic and Empowering Mafraq Youth

The Nabad Youth of Mafraq Agricultural Cooperative launched an agricultural project titled "Horizons for Cultivating Local Garlic" in the Sama Al-Sarehan area of Mafraq Governorate, covering an area of about 12 dunams, with the aim of supporting agricultural investment, empowering youth, and enhancing local production based on sustainable agriculture principles.

The project launch was in cooperation and coordination with the Jordanian Cooperative Institution, represented by the Mafraq Cooperative Director Dr. Lamaa Shadifat, and the Jordan River Foundation represented by the Platform Director Zeya Al-Otoum, and with the support and funding of the French Development Agency, within the framework of a cooperation agreement aimed at establishing the concept of agricultural investment, supporting cooperative work, and providing economic opportunities for youth.

Dr. Lamaa Shadifat, Director of the Mafraq Cooperative, said that the Jordanian Cooperative Institution views such projects as a practical model of the role of cooperatives in transforming youth energies into sustainable production projects, emphasizing the importance of partnership between the cooperative sector and national and international institutions supporting the agricultural sector.

She added that the local garlic cultivation project in Sama Al-Sarehan represents a step in the right direction towards enhancing local agricultural production and benefiting from the agricultural advantage enjoyed by Mafraq Governorate, noting that the Cooperative Institution continues to support cooperative initiatives that contribute to empowering youth and increasing their ability to establish income-generating projects.

Shadifat emphasized the importance of adhering to sound agricultural practices and technical and engineering supervision over production stages, ensuring the production of a high-quality agricultural product that opens the way for future expansion in production and marketing.

The project inspection visit included reviewing the stages of work and production in the agricultural land, and discussing ways to develop the project in the coming stages, enhancing its success opportunities and turning it into an expandable and beneficial experience in similar agricultural and cooperative projects.

The "Horizons for Cultivating Local Garlic" project aims to produce local garlic according to high-quality agricultural specifications, benefiting from specialized agricultural supervision and applying practices that support sustainability, in line with the directions aimed at increasing cultivated areas, supporting national production, and reducing dependence on imported agricultural products.

The project reflects the importance of cooperative work in Mafraq Governorate and its role in creating investment opportunities for youth, transforming agricultural lands into productive projects that contribute to enhancing economic and social development, alongside supporting food security and local production trends.
