The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the unanimous adoption by the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) of the resolution concerning the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, under the item titled "Occupied Palestine," during its 225th session today in Paris.
The Ministry's official spokesperson, Ambassador Sufyan Qudah, explained that the resolution adopted by the Executive Board today reiterated the demand for Israel, the occupying power, to cease all its unilateral, illegitimate, and illegal measures in the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, which target the exceptional cultural and historical value of Jerusalem and endanger the city's cultural heritage, deeming them null and void.
He added that the resolution expressed regret over the Israeli occupation authorities' failure to comply with demands to stop ongoing excavations, tunnel digging, works related to the cable car project, and other projects in East Jerusalem, which are considered illegal, and reiterated its demand for Israel to cease all violations.
Al-Majali stated that this resolution confirms the constants of the Jordanian position regarding the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, including the Islamic and Christian holy sites, and the preservation of the historical and legal status quo therein. It also reaffirms the contents of previous resolutions issued by the Executive Board and the decisions of the World Heritage Committee regarding Jerusalem.
