Mehdi Tabatabai, Deputy Head of the Communications Department at the Iranian Presidential Office, announced on Sunday that Oil Minister Mohsen Pakzad has resigned from his position and that President Masoud Barzani has accepted his resignation.
Tabatabai stated that Pakzad formally submitted his resignation, and Barzani accepted it, as reported by Tasnim News Agency.
Tabatabai added that Hamid Bord has been appointed as the acting Oil Minister to manage the ministry's affairs in the coming period.
Although the reasons for the Iranian minister's resignation were not mentioned, it coincides with the United States imposing unprecedented sanctions on Iran, particularly against the oil sector.
On Saturday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Pent said that Iran no longer has any floating oil at sea and will not generate any revenue from oil sales this week.
On August 25, the US Treasury Department announced the launch of the "Economic Outcast Operation," a broad campaign aimed at completely isolating Iran from the global financial system.
On February 28 last year, the United States and Israel waged a war on Iran that left thousands dead, and Tehran responded with attacks on Israel and US sites in the region.
Later, the United States launched attacks on sites in Iran amid the deadlock in negotiations between the two countries, despite signing a memorandum of understanding in mid-June.
The negotiations stalled due to disagreements over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important strategic passages for global energy and commodity supplies.
