Iran announces targeting of third supertanker in Hormuz within two days

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced, on Monday, the targeting of a third supertanker within two days while it was attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

The Revolutionary Guard said in a statement that the third vessel, classified as a "supertanker" for its capacity to carry about two million barrels of oil, attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after turning off its navigation systems.

The statement claimed that the tanker attempted to disrupt order and security in the strait, which is why the Iranian armed forces targeted it, leading to a fire breaking out on board.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched military attacks on Iran that resulted in thousands of deaths, and Tehran responded by launching attacks on Israel and American sites in countries in the region, before reaching a ceasefire last April.

Later, the United States launched attacks on sites in Iran, in light of the stalled negotiations between the two countries, despite their signing of a memorandum of understanding in mid-June.

The stalling of negotiations comes against the backdrop of disputes over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered one of the most important strategic corridors for global energy and commodity supplies.
