Iranian media quoted the Revolutionary Guard Navy on Tuesday as saying that a supertanker caught fire after colliding with a naval mine south of the Strait of Hormuz while "violating" Iranian regulations, which led to an explosion and fire in its engine room, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
The public relations office of the Revolutionary Guard Navy stated that the oil tanker was attempting to exit the strait after turning off all its GPS and navigation systems at its point of departure.
The statement added that the vessel was attempting to pass through an unauthorized southern route, ignoring the regulations governing transit through the strait.
Last July, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to all traffic.
