Hidden signs warning of liver cirrhosis

Alcoholic liver cirrhosis may develop for years without clear symptoms, as some may think that constant fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss are merely effects of stress, while these signs may be an indicator of liver damage.

Dr. Svetlana Cherebitsina, a gastroenterologist, explains that potential early symptoms include constant weakness, unexplained weight loss, nausea, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, in addition to muscle weakness and cramps. However, these symptoms alone are not enough to confirm the condition.

As the disease progresses, more obvious signs may appear, most notably yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, swelling of the legs and bloating of the abdomen due to fluid accumulation, easy bruising and bleeding, as well as changes in the color of urine and stool, and memory and concentration disorders.

When does the condition become dangerous?

The doctor warns against ignoring jaundice, severe swelling, rapid abdominal bloating, or changes in the level of consciousness. Vomiting blood or black stools may indicate internal bleeding that requires immediate medical intervention, and an ambulance should be called in the event of bleeding or mental confusion.

Can the liver recover after stopping alcohol?

Complete abstinence from alcohol is an essential step in treating alcoholic liver disease, and it may help improve the condition and reduce complications, even in some patients with advanced liver cirrhosis. However, recovery chances depend on the extent of the damage to the liver, and full restoration of its functions cannot be guaranteed.

Continuing to consume alcohol may lead to worsening damage. Therefore, it is advised to consult a doctor when a liver problem is suspected to perform the necessary tests, including blood tests, liver function evaluation, ultrasound imaging, and to determine the appropriate treatment.
