Twelve migrants, including an infant, died today, Monday, following two separate boat accidents off the coasts of the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos in the Aegean Sea.
The Greek Coast Guard stated that the first incident occurred off the island of Lesbos when a speedboat carrying migrants collided with the port side of a port police patrol boat, resulting in the deaths of six people: a man, four women, and an infant, while eight others survived.
It added that the second incident occurred at dawn today, Monday, 3.7 nautical miles off the coast of Samos island, after a boat carrying migrants capsized, leading to the deaths of six people: five men and one woman, while 14 people survived, including one person suspected of involvement in migrant smuggling.
Shipwrecks involving migrant boats are frequent in the Aegean Sea, which migrants use in an attempt to reach Europe via the Greek islands. The waters surrounding the island of Crete in southern Greece also witness similar incidents.
