Death Toll from Ferry Sinking in Indonesia Rises to 64

The death toll from the sinking of a passenger ferry two weeks ago in the Java Sea in Indonesia has risen to 64, according to an official announcement on Saturday, while authorities have recently extended the search for dozens of missing people.

Yudi Pramaditya, Director of the National Search and Rescue Agency, said during a press conference, "Out of 243 people on board the ferry, 172 were evacuated, 108 survived, 64 died, and the search is still ongoing for 71 others"

The ferry "Fergo Transport 8" was carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members when it departed from Surabaya in East Java, heading to Banjarmasin in Borneo.

Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, which comprises over 17,000 islands and relies heavily on maritime transport, partly due to non-compliance with safety standards and weather conditions.
