13 children killed in boat capsizing during festival in India

Rescue teams pulled the bodies of 13 children from the Ganges River in India after a boat on its way to a festival capsized, officials said Wednesday, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief.

Vaishali District Magistrate in Bihar state, Varsha Singh, said the boat was carrying between 15 and 20 people when it capsized late Tuesday in the district, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

She added that all the victims were 15 years old or younger, noting that the exact number of passengers is not yet known.

Modi said in a statement on Wednesday that "the loss of lives in the boat capsizing incident in Vaishali, Bihar, is extremely painful," announcing compensation for the families of the victims as rescue operations continue.
