Guterres calls on Washington and Tehran to end the conflict and return to diplomacy

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Tuesday for the United States and Iran to end the conflict and return to diplomacy.

According to the Pakistani newspaper 'Dawn', Guterres, who is on an official visit to Pakistan, met with Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar in the capital Islamabad.

During a joint press conference, Guterres praised the Pakistani leadership for its contribution to mediation efforts, noting that its endeavors on international peace and security issues contributed to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and the establishment of a framework for subsequent negotiations.

Guterres said: "I want to send a clear and explicit message to all parties: end the conflict, return to diplomacy, and re-establish navigation rights in accordance with international law".

He addressed the Palestinian issue, affirming that peace in the region will not be achieved unless the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination is recognized.

For his part, Dar said that his country plays a "proactive and constructive" role in encouraging dialogue and reducing tension in the Gulf region.

He explained that Pakistan's approach is based on encouraging "cooperation instead of conflict, dialogue instead of confrontation, and peaceful solutions instead of the use of force".

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a war on Iran that left thousands dead, and Tehran retaliated with attacks on Israel and US sites in the region, before a ceasefire was reached in April.

Later, the United States launched attacks on sites in Iran, amid the deadlock in negotiations between the two countries, despite the signing of a memorandum of understanding in mid-June.

The stalled negotiations are due to disagreements over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important strategic corridors for global energy and commodity supplies.
