Green Hydrogen Project in Partnership Between Jordan and China

This led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Chinese company Getting International Energy Holdings Co. Ltd. to conduct the necessary technical studies for developing a green hydrogen and its derivatives project, using renewable energy sources and desalinated water in Aqaba.

Energy Minister Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh confirmed that the memorandum of understanding is a result of signing the comprehensive strategic memorandum of understanding with the National Energy Administration of China during the King's recent visit, where this memorandum is an important step towards moving bilateral relations from the framework of general cooperation to more practical horizons, alongside exploring several areas of cooperation; including the development of green hydrogen projects with the participation of Chinese companies, especially since the green hydrogen sector has received royal attention during His Majesty's visit and meeting with the Chinese President.

He pointed out that Jordan is cooperating with several Chinese companies specialized in this field, which supports the Kingdom's directions to implement the national green fuel strategy, and develop green hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, confirming that the studies to be conducted under the memorandum of understanding will provide a technical and economic evaluation of the project, in preparation for making a decision regarding its development and implementation.

He stressed that strengthening relations with China and opening channels to access new markets will enhance the economic feasibility of green hydrogen and its derivatives projects, as the Kingdom seeks to turn the outputs of studies and memoranda of understanding into actual projects, contributing to the development of the sector and enhancing Jordan's competitiveness in the green fuel field.

The memorandum of understanding includes studying the possibility of establishing the project near the port of Aqaba, evaluating the project's integrated value chain, including renewable energy, desalination, green hydrogen and ammonia production, energy storage and electricity transmission, in addition to logistics and port services.

The memorandum also includes conducting studies and evaluating the technical, environmental and social aspects of the project, estimating the cost of hydrogen production, and determining the land required for its establishment, with the Chinese company preparing a pre-feasibility technical study for the project.

This cooperation between Jordan and China is an important step towards strengthening the economic partnership between the two countries, and it is necessary to build on the recent royal visit to China to build stronger and more robust economic relations with China, which is considered a global economic engine in all industrial, commercial and advanced technology sectors, and we must be more capable of interacting with Chinese partners with seriousness and responsibility.

The royal visit to China opened doors to various sectors, and the meeting between His Majesty the King and the Chinese President was the first step towards building a strategic partnership that draws new features in a world where industry and technology are accelerating, and it is necessary to be more keen to present Jordan and its investment advantages and national competencies to Chinese investors in a manner befitting us and our leadership, God bless Jordan.
