Following the Royal Visit to China.. Al-Kharabisheh Signs a Memorandum of Understanding to Develop a Green Hydrogen Project in Aqaba

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabisheh, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chairman of the Chinese company Getting International Energy Holdings Co. Ltd, "Yin Ming Shan", on Monday, to conduct the necessary technical studies for developing a project to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives in Jordan, using renewable energy sources and desalinated water in Aqaba.

Al-Kharabisheh confirmed that the memorandum of understanding comes in the wake of the royal visit to the People's Republic of China, and within the framework of enhancing economic and investment cooperation between the two countries, especially in the green hydrogen sector, which received royal attention during His Majesty's visit and meeting with the Chinese President, where a comprehensive strategic memorandum of understanding was signed with the National Energy Administration of China, which represents an important step towards transitioning the bilateral relations from a general cooperation framework to more practical horizons, in addition to discussing a number of cooperation fields, including the development of green hydrogen projects with the participation of Chinese companies.

During the signing of the memorandum of understanding, Al-Kharabisheh pointed out that Jordan is cooperating with several Chinese companies specialized in this field, which supports the Kingdom's directions to implement the national green fuel strategy and develop green hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, confirming that the studies to be conducted under the memorandum of understanding will provide a technical and economic evaluation of the project, in preparation for making a decision regarding its development and implementation.

Al-Kharabisheh pointed out that strengthening relations with China and opening channels to access new markets will enhance the economic feasibility of green hydrogen and its derivatives projects, and confirming the Kingdom's endeavor to turn the outputs of the studies and memoranda of understanding into actual projects, contributing to the development of the sector and enhancing Jordan's competitiveness in the green fuel field.

The memorandum of understanding includes studying the possibility of establishing the project near the port of Aqaba, and evaluating the integrated value chain of the project, including renewable energy, desalination, green hydrogen and ammonia production, energy storage, and electricity transmission, in addition to logistics and port services.

The studies also include evaluating the technical, environmental, and social aspects of the project, estimating the cost of hydrogen production, and determining the land required for its establishment, with the Chinese company preparing a technical pre-feasibility study for the project.
