“Give Light to Others”.. An initiative that restores the hope of sight to corneal patients in Irbid

The awareness campaign “Give Light to Others” was launched yesterday at Princess Basma Teaching Hospital in Irbid Governorate, implemented by the Friends of the Jordan Eye Bank Society in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Amman Ammon and in partnership with the Jordan Eye Bank, as part of the “Fighting Blindness in Jordan” project, which extends until 2027.

The hospital held an extensive awareness program yesterday, under the patronage and supervision of the hospital director, Dr. Walid Hamza Al-Halabi, and in cooperation with the Ophthalmology Department, with the aim of enhancing community awareness of corneal diseases, the importance of early detection and treatment, and spreading the culture of corneal donation after death to reduce waiting lists for patients in need.

Hospital Director Dr. Walid Hamza Al-Halabi said that the hospital is keen to support national and humanitarian initiatives that contribute to raising health awareness levels among citizens and medical staff, stressing the importance of partnership between health institutions and civil associations to develop medical services and alleviate the suffering of patients.

Head of the Ophthalmology Department, Dr. Nisreen Al-Makhadmeh, said during her participation that the program focuses on introducing corneal diseases and the cases that require surgical intervention for transplantation, noting that there are large numbers of patients awaiting the opportunity for a corneal transplant to restore the blessing of sight and live their normal lives.

The seminar included a discussion session that hosted Dr. Ahmed Al-Baqai and Father Dionysius Haddad to clarify the legal position in both the Islamic and Christian religions regarding the legitimacy of corneal donation after death, and to emphasize the human and religious values that call for charity and solidarity.

The conclusion of the program witnessed the honoring of participants and the families of corneal donors, represented by Dr. Amal Al-Zuyout, in appreciation of their humanitarian initiatives that contribute to giving hope and a future to patients in need.
