German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for an unannounced visit, reflecting his country's support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
Merz said in a statement after arriving in the Ukrainian capital: "I traveled to Kyiv today because Ukraine needs our support in the coming weeks".
He added: "If Russia is not stopped, its military machine will come to us sooner or later".
Merz is accompanied by the Minister of Economy, Katerina Reiche, according to government sources, as Germany is one of the largest supporters of Ukraine.
Merz said: "I will tell President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today: You can continue to count on our help".
The visit comes a day after Russia warned foreigners and diplomats to stay away from the Ukrainian capital, announcing that Kyiv would face new large-scale airstrikes.
Moscow had issued a similar warning in May, but leaders of countries supporting Ukraine defied the warnings and continued to visit Kyiv.
The Ukrainian capital has recently witnessed heavy airstrikes, while Ukrainian officials have appealed for more air defense ammunition to counter Russian drone and missile attacks.
