A spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that Paris regrets the decision by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to postpone the legislative and presidential elections, and calls on him to reconsider the decision.
Abbas announced on Saturday the postponement of the legislative elections to September 11, 2027, after they were scheduled for next month, and called for presidential elections on the same date, blaming Israel and the security situation in the Palestinian territories for the decision to postpone.
The French Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement, "France calls on the Palestinian authorities to reverse their decision and organize parliamentary and presidential elections throughout Palestine as soon as possible."
The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a presidential decree on Saturday calling for simultaneous presidential and legislative elections on September 11, 2027, based on the decision of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and after canceling Decree No. (4) of 2026, which called for holding the legislative elections on November 28, 2026.
The new decree calls on the Palestinian people in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip to participate in free and direct presidential and legislative elections to elect the President of the State of Palestine and members of the Palestinian Legislative Council simultaneously, in accordance with the provisions of the law.
