Ethiopian Parliament Renews Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister Until 2031

The Ethiopian House of Peoples' Representatives, on Monday, renewed the appointment of Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister for a new term of five years until 2031, according to the Ethiopian News Agency "ENA".

This happened during the first regular session of the Council dedicated to forming the government, within the first legislative year of the seventh parliamentary session.

Following his appointment, Abiy Ahmed took the constitutional oath, marking the beginning of his new term at the head of the federal government.

The session to form the government was attended by a number of senior government officials and members of the diplomatic corps, according to "ENA".

The renewal of Abiy Ahmed's appointment follows the recent national elections held on June 1, 2026.

In the parliamentary elections, the ruling "Prosperity Party" led by Abiy Ahmed achieved a sweeping and historic victory by securing an absolute majority after securing 438 seats out of 501, paving the way for the renewal of confidence and consensus around Abiy Ahmed for a third term of government, lasting five years.

Abiy Ahmed has held the Ethiopian government's premiership three times, the first (2018 - 2021) where he assumed power on a transitional basis after the resignation of former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, followed by a second term of 5 years.
