Reappointment of Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister of Ethiopia

Ethiopia's parliament reappointed Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister on Monday, following the sweeping victory of his party in the June elections.

The new President of Parliament, Ahmed Shede, announced in a televised session, "Abiy Ahmed is reappointed as Prime Minister of Ethiopia."

Ethiopian federal forces took control of Mekele, the capital of the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, after the withdrawal of militants, while 4 neighboring countries at a summit in Egypt called for the resolution of regional conflicts through "political and peaceful solutions."

The federal forces entered Mekele on Saturday without a fight, following the withdrawal of the militant authorities. The army was supported by the "Tigray Peace Force," a local armed force formed by defectors from the Tigray People's Liberation Front who now support the authority of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
