Democrats deem Trump's deal on Russian diesel a "betrayal"

Three prominent Democratic senators in the US Senate described President Donald Trump's agreement with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to purchase Russian diesel as a betrayal of Ukraine, European allies, and US national security.

Three US senators wrote in a statement: "Enough is enough. The President must end his war with Iran instead of funding the Russian war machine."

The signatories are Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, the ranking Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee Jeanne Shaheen, and Senator Elizabeth Warren, a senior member of the Banking Committee.

Trump's announcement allowing global purchases of Russian diesel came as a surprise to lawmakers, especially as it followed Congress's overwhelming approval of legislation, signed into law by Trump himself last month, which imposes strict sanctions on countries that purchase Russian energy that funds the war against Ukraine.
