Cosmetics are a threat to the eyes!

An American study has warned of the dangers of certain cosmetics and personal care products to eye health, after they caused thousands of injuries that required treatment in American hospital emergency departments.

Researchers analyzed injury data recorded between 2005 and 2024, finding that approximately 42,500 people received medical care as a result of injuries related to cosmetics and personal care products, most notably hair setting sprays, eyelash glue, nail polish, and thermal hair styling tools.

The results showed that women and girls accounted for 82% of those injured, while children under the age of five represented about a quarter of the cases.

According to the study, chemical burns were the most prominent risks threatening children, while cuts, bruises, and scratches accounted for 56% of adult injuries, and 22% of cases were linked to thermal burns, including injuries caused by hair styling devices.

The researchers stressed the necessity of keeping cosmetics out of the reach of children and using thermal styling tools with caution, while constantly monitoring young children, especially since 70% of those injured under the age of five were injured while using cosmetics without adult supervision.
