Azerbaijan bans Iranian flights

Azerbaijan Airlines "AZAL" announced on Tuesday the suspension of Iranian airlines' flights to Azerbaijan, due to new US sanctions targeting the Iranian aviation sector.

The company stated in a statement that the decision took effect as of September 22, 2026, noting that it came due to the new US sanctions package, particularly the restrictions imposed on the Iranian aviation sector.

The decision comes after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bissent said on Monday that the threat of secondary sanctions on air service providers would lead to Iranian airlines ceasing operations as of September 23.

Bissent explained in an interview with CNBC that providing services to Iranian aircraft, including refueling, landing services, and ticket sales, could expose the concerned parties to exclusion from the dollar-based financial system.
